New Mexico Roadside Attractions: The Roadrunner

For all you people out there who think that the stretch on I-10 through west Texas and southern New Mexico is the most soul-sucking drive known to man…I agree with you! The terrain in New Mexico doesn’t get even remotely interesting until you travel off the Interstate…40 or 10!

However, if you are stuck driving this deserted interstate, might as well stop for one of its roadside attractions! So for those of you who like the weird and the quirky, this post is for you!

This little guy perches atop a hill overlooking Las Cruces, NM.  (I would like to think of his name as Bucky, and will refer to him as such from here on out!) The story goes that an artist made this roadrunner completely out of recycled materials (aka, trash). You can see in the picture below that his underbelly is made up of old Ked-looking shoes!

Directions:

My friend Bucky the Roadrunner here is directly accessible via I-10E, no exits or turns required! Since it is a rest stop, it is only accessible on the eastbound side of I-10. There will be signs for a rest stop nearing Las Cruces. You will find this rest stop’s exit just a little past mile 135.

It’s actually a pretty clean rest stop with lots of picnic tables and such.  You can literally walk right up underneath the roadrunner, and the views of Las Cruces are great!

So if you’re making a trip along this way, stop and say hello to Bucky!
