Ultimate Guide to Stand Up Paddle Board through Antelope Canyon

Most people know that you can visit Antelope Canyon via the Upper or Lower tours, but did you know that Antelope Canyon is accessible from Lake Powell?? I actually didn’t know about it until I had already been in Page for a whole day! What was even more surprising is that many sites count Lake Powell’s Antelope Canyon as one of the top places to stand up paddle board in the world! Well of course when we found that out we knew we had to make some time in our schedule to experience it!!

Now before we go any further, I’m going to stop and apologize right now for the quality of the pictures in this post!! I was really afraid to bring my Nikon, despite buying a waterproof bag, because it would’ve broken my heart to ruin my beloved camera before I even reached the Grand Canyon! All these pics are off my phone, so don’t judge too harshly!

Where to rent a Paddle Board or kayak:

We rented from Lake Powell Paddleboards, and I definitely recommend them! Since it was our first time to try paddle-boarding, they gave us a quick run-down and lots of tips to keep us afloat! They also gave us a map to the launch point and helped us load our gear onto our rental car.  They definitely made our spur of the moment decision easy!

Difficult to see in this picture but near the middle is the entrance to the canyon!

Where to launch from:

Antelope Point Launch Ramp is where you will enter the lake.  You take AZ-98 E out towards the Antelope Canyon tours.  Turn left onto Indian Rte 222, which takes you right past the Lower Antelope Canyon touring companies.  Continue straight all the way until you reach the fee area for this launch ramp, then drop your boards off and park!

Cost:

Of course ,prices are subject to change over time.  At the time of our visit in September 2018, we paid $30 per paddle board, and we also paid $30 to enter the Recreation Area.  If you have a national parks pass, you do not have to pay the fee to enter the Recreation Area. Otherwise, the pass is good for 7 days and will get you into other Lake Powell Marinas and Recreation Areas.

Directions from launch point:

Once you enter the water, you follow the shoreline to the left heading south.  The entrance to Antelope Canyon is about a mile from the launch point, and about another two miles once inside the canyon. The entrance is pretty easy to find with all the kayakers, paddle boarders, and even boat tours entering and exiting the canyon.  There is a no wake policy through the canyon which makes it a lot easier to stay on your board!

Tips:

  • Try and start your journey in the morning! We were warned that the afternoon is not the best time to be on the lake due to high winds, which are most prevalent in the spring and fall.  We didn’t really have a choice, because our trip here was pretty spur of the moment, but even with the wind we had an awesome time!
  • Bring waterproof gear so you can take pictures of your awesome time here!
  • Bring lots of water!!! The sun is killer out here, even in the water!! Make sure you stay hydrated so you can enjoy the rest of your trip!

Note how I’m not standing??? Turns out I suck at stand up paddle boarding!!

Once you get through the length of the canyon there is a place to drop your board or kayak and take a hike! We started later in the afternoon, so we were unable to paddle to the end of the canyon where the hiking trail was.  Maybe next time! It sure looks cool!

If you are wanting to see Antelope Canyon via Lake Powell but don’t want to put forth any strenuous effort, you could always try a boat tour into the canyon! There are a couple of places that offer boat tours, but in an effort to be helpful here’s a link to one of them!
